On Saturday the Blues faced a formidable Norfolk men’s team in a closely contested friendly fixture held at the University Lawn Tennis Club. At the request of the Norfolk team (eager to prepare for their County Week later this summer) the teams played three rounds of three doubles matches.
The first of these rounds saw Norfolk take a 2-1 lead in matches, although the Blues’ number one pairing of Sam Ashcroft and Tim Prossor were able to claim an impressive 6-3 7-6 victory over a strong Norfolk pairing.
Ashcroft and Prossor won again – 6-4 6-1, on this occasion – in the first of the second round of matches. The Blues’ other two pairings were, however, again defeated in what were very closely fought encounters: Alex Cole and Jerry Ganendra were edged out by the visitors’ number one pairing, while Gerald Wu and Jack Long-Martinez were unfortunate to lose 10-7 in a deciding tiebreak having been dominant for much of their match, with the effect that Norfolk were able to take a 4-2 lead into the final round. Unfortunately, this went the same way as the first two, although this time it was Wu and Long-Martinez who were victorious over their opponents 4-6 6-4 10-4.
Final result: 6-3 to Norfolk. A disappointing result for the Blues, but certainly lots of positives to be taken from what was a very even game against a very strong visiting outfit.
