|Oxford University Men’s 1st||10||Win|
A tough match for the Men’s Blues this week against the Oxford Blues. The match started with Doubles, with the Cambridge first pair playing against Zeb Nicholls and Josh Berry. Numerous sudden death deuces without conversion lead Cambridge to a disappointing 6-3, 7-5 loss. At number 2, Gerald Wu and Jack Long-Martinez put up a heroic fight but emerged tired and disappointed against Oxford’s Kushal Kansagra and James Telford, 6-7, 6-4, 10-8.
Sergey Yelnik then won his match at number 3 in a tight, close fought battle, beating James 10-4 in a match tie break after splitting sets. Gerald’s solid groundstrokes proved to not be enough to beat Zeb at number 1, losing 6-3, 6-2. Jerry was overpowered at 2 by Kushal’s massive serves 6-1, 6-3. Jack lost another close fought battle at 4, losing 10-8 in a match tie break after splitting sets. Overall score 10-2.
This match has made clear the amount of work the Cambridge team needs to put into the coming weeks to gain a victory on the grass in June – a challenge the team fully accepts. The squad has 5 months to prepare, make up ground and bounce back to regain the Doherty Cup.
