|University of Cambridge Women’s 1st||4||Loss|
|University of Bath Women’s 2nd||8||Win|
Today was the first and only match of the Christmas holidays and so all of the keen team members who stayed in Cambridge played. At pair no. 1 Monika and Jane… Well they don’t really make a good combination. Both excellent doubles players in their own right but maybe they should find other people. They lost 2-6 3-6. At 2nd pair Jas and Laura had a tusstle against a solid pair from Bath and managed to get it to a 3rd set tiebreak. A couple unlucky lobs and bad line calls later, they lost 2-6 6-1 2-10.
Singles went better for Monika and Jane, who both dispatched their opponents without much trouble. Jane only lost a single game in the whole match (6-1 6-0). Monika, after a loose start (3-6), realised that if she mixed up some shots aimed at her opponent’s forehand then she would fly through. After that the score was 6-1 10-3. Yes Cambridge thinking!
At number 3 and 4 Yas and Laura had some tough times. Yas played the captain of the opposition, who was very petite and athletic. Badly in need of match practice, Yas lost 2-6 0-6. Laura had the same score in her match but was on court for substantially longer. Her opponent was very lucky and won all of 8 deuce games in a row!
While this loss is definitely a set back Cambridge 1st Team is not down and out yet: but to stay in our group we need to make every effort to train harder, get out best team out every week and make sure we have some truly gelled and harmonious doubles pairs.
