Now the moment you’ve all been waiting for: the WINNING match report for Cambridge University Women’s 1st Team! Both Bath pairs were strong but the new team of Kadi and Jane at no. 1 was unexpectedly impressive and the experienced pairing of “Tanika” (Monika and Tanya) knew this was their time to shine. On both courts there were tussles and both matches lasted just under 2 hours. Tanika’s first set went almost strictly on serve but it was ultimately lost 7-6 (5). The second set and championship tiebreaker were a different matter altogether, and they closed out the rest of the match quickly: 6-7 6-2 10-7. Kadi and Jane were unlucky to ultimately lose 1-6 5-7.
The singles matches went on with 45 minutes of indoor court time to spare and Monika acted upon this, comfortably batting away her opponent’s challenge and only having to play outside in the bubble for two quick games. She won 6-3 6-1.
Tanya looked to be in a comfortable position against her opponent’s unusual style of play: ungainly but fast footwork and tricky drop-shot slices. She was 6-4 4-2 up before they were moved to the outdoor bubble. Unfortunately the bad lighting and slippy AstroTurf suited her opponent who then went ahead in the second set. Luckily, the set tiebreak was played indoors and Tanya took the match 6-4 7-6(4).
Jane came up against a very hard-hitting and erratic lefty and failed to convert enough games. She lost valiantly 5-7 2-6.
The star player badge must much be awarded to Kadi Liis Saar who won a mammoth encounter against a player who would rather cut off her left arm than concede a point. The first set alone lasted a hour and a half! But Kadi, with sprints from right to left and winners from nowhere, prevailed 7-5 2-6 10-5.
