After a long journey to Exeter, the team was sluggish in the initial doubles matches. Things improved in the singles, where there were some outstanding periods of play from all four members of the team. A particular highlight was watching Jane scrambling about the court, reaching a drop shot to hit a glorious backhand lob. Unfortunately these moments were few and far between, but a sign of things to come we would like to think. Flora’s string of aces was something to write home about, and Monika and Jenni’s edited highlights would have been Wimbledon-worthy.
Scores on the doors: in the doubles, the teams managed a grand total of one game apiece. In singles, Jenni proved that three is the magic number, Monika loves her bagels and Flora and her partner exchanged breaks of serve rather generously, culminating in a 6-3, 6-3 score line. Marathon match of the day goes to Jane, who managed to get to a 3rd set, bringing it home (the wrong home) in two and a half hours; 6-4, 4-6, 2-6.
Despite losing, the team felt they improved from the experience and look forward to facing Bath 1sts at home next week.
