Match Report

Spurred on by our triumphant victory last week, the tennis girls headed to Northampton for what was to be another victorious, if more closely fought, fixture.

We kicked it off with the doubles. Chloe and Anna came up against a very strong pairing. The opponents’ net play proved too much for the ordinarily dynamic duo and we suffered a disappointing defeat. On a brighter note, Leah and new comer Beth proved an indomitable force, brushing aside their opposition with ease. We entered the singles with a level score board.

Beth once again showed no signs of beginners’ nerves as she stormed to a 6-0 6-0 win, double bagel, double donut – whatever lingo you want to use – it’s safe to say our newbie smashed it!

Anna had a similarly straightforward match, hardly breaking a sweat as she won 6-1 6-2.

The tougher matches were still to come though. A draw secured, we really needed one win from our remaining two singles matches to gain a victory overall. Leah and Chloe played simultaneously on neighbouring courts as Anna and Beth watched on nervously from the comfort of the café, free coffees in hand.

Leah put in a stellar performance, thrashing the ball from the baseline and producing some impressive winners, down the line, cross court – you name it, Leah was hitting the spot. Unfortunately, the strength and agility of her rather talented opposition took its toll and we lost out 4-6 2-6.

So it all rested on Chloe’s singles – captain Chloe as we like to call her – and she certainly didn’t let us down. Taking the first set 6-1, the second went to a nail biting tie break and pesky nerves rose to the surface as our player crumbled at the last minute. It all rested on the final set, stakes were high and energy levels were low. Nevertheless Chloe was too determines to let this deter her as she clenched the set 6-2.

So we left happy and tired with yet another win under our belts. Well done everyone!
