|University of Cambridge Women’s 2nd||6||Draw|
|Nottingham Trent University Women’s 1st||6||Draw|
After a Christmas break of fun-filled festivities, the team were ready to play their first fixture of the New Year – with a full set of new stash to match. Following the success of last term it certainly wasn’t a case of “new year, new me” but rather the team looked to build on their previous positive performances.
However, this was to be no walk in the park as we were to face Nottingham Trent, the league leaders. Leah and Laura faced a hard-hitting duo who proved tough opponents and, although our girls took the first set, they were unlucky to lose in three.
Anna and Chloe teamed up once more and looked stronger than ever. Concentration, communication, coordination – they had it all and took the match 6-2, 6-3.
Leah had arguably the toughest match as her opponent blasted the ball around the court. Leah’s scrambling, scrapping and scurrying kept her in the match until the (bitter) end but her opposition proved too strong, taking the match 6-3, 6-4.
On the opposite court, Anna had a similarly grinding encounter. Three intense sets of gruelling base line rallies and speedy serves were played. Losing the first 6-7 but taking the second 6-4, Anna unfortunately fell at the last (metaphorical) hurdle as her opponent took the third.
Chloe had a similar three set battle, taking the first set with ease, the second proved trickier as her rival stepped up her game. However Chloe made sure she stepped up hers too and won the third set comfortably.
Laura spent much of the afternoon spectating as she brushed her opponent away in the blink of an eye, to win 6-1, 6-2.
A draw seemed a fair outcome as both teams showed commendable determination and skill. Sore legged and weary armed, the team return to Cambridge – the winning streak may have been broken.
