The Cambridge women’s 2nd team had their first match of the season today against UEA at our home courts of Peterborough. The day started with doubles. The two freshers Charlotte and Claudia made an impressive debut, finishing off their opponents 6-1, 6-0. A star doubles pairing in the making we think! Laura and Georgina had a tougher match against UEA’s first pair. After 4 sudden death deuces going against us, we were unfortunate to lose the first set 6-4. The UEA pair then decided to swap sides for their second set, to their disadvantage as we fought back winning the second 6-4. A very tense and unlucky tiebreak resulted us losing 10-6. Onto the singles now. Claudia’s fresh faced opponent at no.4 scared her into stepping up her game after losing the first 2 games. She then went onto smash it and win the next 12 consecutive games to win the match 6-2,6-0. Georgina had a similarly easy match at no.2, only losing 2 points in the first set. However she got cocky in the second and after giving away two easy games realised she didn’t quite have Federer’s ability to make everything look effortless, so stepped it up to win 6-0,6-2. Charlotte had a slightly tougher match at no.3, but after some long rallies and lots of deuce games, she won it comfortably 6-3,6-2. Laura had by far the toughest match at no.1, playing a very hard hitting and clever player, who was tactically having some long chats between games to get her breath back! Many drop shots, short angled balls and deuces later, and Laura was unfortunate to lose 6-4,6-2. However we won 8-4 overall! A great start to the 2nds BUCS campaign and hopefully to be continued in future matches.
